Purpose of the Role
We have an opening for a motivated and highly qualified leader for the Protein Engineering and Monoclonal Antibody Technologies (PEAT) group within New Biological Entities (NBE) Technologies.
As Global Head of PEAT you are globally responsible for Merck Serono's entire biotherapeutics pipeline from the target to the delivery of preclinical candidates. You will work in close collaboration with our therapeutic areas, Autoimmune & Inflammatory diseases, Oncology as well as Neurodegenerative Diseases, to select the best NBE approaches to address highly valuable drug targets. You will use and further expand our broad biotherapeutics platform encompassing monoclonal antibodies, Fc-fusion proteins and new protein scaffolds to design, discover and progress competitive biotherapeutics. As Global Head of PEAT you will reports to the Head of NBE Technologies and you will be part of an energetic team in a key strategic area within Merck Serono.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities :
As Global Head of PEAT you will have responsibilities including, but not limited to, the following:
• Leading the PEAT group, with direct reporting responsibility for 3 division leaders and a staff of over 40 scientists in Boston, Geneva and Darmstadt
• Managing the group and assuming responsibility for PEAT projects by driving and coordinating your direct reports in achieving the specific objectives of the respective research projects
• Defining the PEAT strategy on current and future technologies including monoclonal antibody technologies, Fc-fusion proteins, protein engineering and new protein scaffolds.
• In collaboration with therapeutic area experts evaluating new drug targets to match with the best technology to achieve competitive biotherapeutics.
• Taking responsibility for the planning and progression of biotherapeutics projects.
• PEAT representative in target selection and Lead discovery committees.
• Responsibility for defining requirements for research projects and identifying potential constraints and risks
• Use of problem solving skills in evaluating issues, and monitoring and initiating corrective actions where necessary, potentially impacting the discovery pipeline
• Evaluation of resources issues and resolution of conflicts with functions Heads, effectively executing research programs by influencing the organizational management chain
The role of the Global Head of PEAT is a strategically critical one as you will have a pivotal impact on the progression of drug candidates from their concept stage to that of pre-clinical.
As Global Head of PEAT you will interact internally with all of the Research Therapeutic Areas, the Biotechnology department as well as with corporate functions such as Business Development and Intellectual Property.
The position should be based at the Merck Serono Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Optionally it can be based at the EMD Serono Research site in Boston.
